Report: Rangers receive two loan approaches for midfielder Greg Docherty

Rangers have reportedly been contacted by English clubs Charlton Athletic and Sunderland about their midfielder Greg Docherty.

, Millwall have expressed an interest in trying to sign the Scottish playmaker.

But it is understood that it will be a straight shootout between Charlton and Sunderland for the 23-year-old, who both want to take him on loan for the rest of the season.

The report details that Docherty is “likely” to be the first player to depart from Ibrox on loan.

Docherty has been on the fringes of Steven Gerrard’s squad this season, making just six appearances across all competitions and none in the league.

He enjoyed a successful loan spell in League One last campaign with English team Shrewsbury Town, where he managed 10 goals and 11 assists in 50 games across all competitions.

TBR’s View:

It makes sense for Rangers to offload Docherty this month, as he’s barely getting a look-in at Ibrox and it will impact his development if he continues stuck on the sidelines.

Sunderland are a big club playing in League One this season and they would be able to provide a promotion bid if he joined them.

But Charlton are playing a division higher in the Championship and they are currently five points above the drop zone.

Charlton have recently lost midfielder Conor Gallagher after he was recalled from his loan by Chelsea, which is why it could make sense for Docherty to join them and test himself in the Championship.
