Report: Rangers hopes of Gary Cahill deal dealt blow

Rangers have been dealt a blow as they look to bring Gary Cahill to Ibrox this summer, that their Champions League exit has left them with less money to play with.

that Steven Gerrard wanted Cahill. In fact, the report claimed that Rangers were prepared to offer the centre-back a deal worth £35,000-a-week.

Cahill is a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace this summer, and it seemed that joining the Scottish Premiership side was a potential option.

However, events of the last few days may have scuppered Rangers’s hopes.

Gerrard’s men missed out on reaching the Champions League group-stages after being beaten in the qualifying rounds by Malmo.

And with that, it would appear that their budget may have been reduced.

, Rangers cannot make such a lucrative offer for Cahill. And it remains to be seen if they press ahead with making an offer for the 35-year-old, who is also wanted by Bournemouth.

Rangers may actually have little need to make Gary Cahill move

Cahill has enjoyed an incredible career, and his time at Palace suggested that he has a few more years left in him.

Having said that, Rangers need to weigh up whether a move makes sense.

Their defence has already proved that it is more than good enough for a Scottish Premiership title-winning side – and they all boast a good level of Europa League experience.

So bringing in a veteran such as Cahill may not be the smartest piece of business as they look to kick on in the coming years.

His experience would be incredibly valuable, but surely, Rangers could potentially spend those funds in better ways.
