Report: Rangers hold strong interest in signing 24-year-old ‘almost on same level’ as Alfredo Morelos

A player heavily linked with Rangers in January and previously described as “almost on the same level” as Ibrox star Alfredo Morelos is reportedly back on Steven Gerrard’s agenda for a summer move.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail (16/4, back page and p79), Rangers are set to launch a new bid for Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes this summer.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a superb breakout season this term, turning in a number of impressive displays for the Doonhammers and claiming 12 goals and 10 assists in all competitions.

Dykes signed for Livingston in January 2019 before heading back to Queen of the South on loan, and Livi’s patience has paid off this season.

The reported back in January that Rangers were interested in Dykes as an alternative to eventual loan signing Florian Kamberi.

In February, after Steven Gerrard’s charges ran out 1-0 winners over Livi, Ibrox ace Nikola Katic told the : “When you play against a striker like Dykes it’s always tough too because he is really good.

“He’s almost on the same level as Alfredo and I think he will become a really top player, it is always hard to play against him.”

The Scottish Daily Mail claims that Rangers hold a “strong interest” in signing Dykes, and want to beat Stoke City in the race to sign the Australian attacker, hoping to tempt him with the promise of European football.

While Rangers’ reported January interest in Dykes didn’t come to fruition in the end, Ibrox legend Ally McCoist expressed surprise that Gerrard and co didn’t snap up the player.

“I like him. I think he’s aggressive, I think he’s quick,” McCoist told in early March, .

“Am I surprised more teams didn’t try and get him in January? Very surprised. In fact to be honest with you I’m really surprised my old team Rangers didn’t go for him. I think he’s a real handful, but I think he probably epitomises the Livingston team.”

Given Morelos’ future at Ibrox remains uncertain, Rangers should certainly start monitoring Dykes once again, given his continued impressive form for the Premiership’s fifth-placed side.
