Report: Rangers could face Manchester City competition in bid to bring highly-rated midfielder to Ibrox in January

Rangers are reportedly tracking PSG midfielder Xavi Simons but say that Giovanni van Bronckhorst could face competition from his old employers Manchester City, in pursuit of the teen.

Simons, 18, has been added to the Rangers shortlist this week. that PSG are in talks with the player’s agent, widely-renowned Mino Raiola, about extending his current contract.

The two-time Netherlands Under-19 ace is about to enter the last six months of his contract. Non-French clubs could pursue a pre-contract arrangement, meaning he would agree in advance and join in the summer.

Rangers are said to be in talks with his agents too. PSG are open to letting him leave on loan, but will only do so once he has signed a contract extension – with van Bronckhorst said to be an admirer.

Manchester City are also said to be keen with Pep Guardiola a big fan of the wonderkid. But Simons wants to play regular first-team football, and would have reservations over a move to The Etihad.

Rangers in race for Simons: Ibrox a better move than Manchester City

Look at Patrick Roberts of Celtic – or even Scott Sinclair. Many players have joined Manchester City at an early stage in their careers and fallen by the way side. Rangers is a much better move.

That includes remaining at PSG. While he will be learning from the best at PSG, there is no better learning curve than getting regular first-team football – and even better, at a side in the Europa League.

Simons is an extraordinary talent that has played twice at senior level for PSG. Joining Rangers on loan, he would give van Bronckhorst a serious option – and strengthen the Gers immediately.
