Report: Rangers close in on Bologna defender Filip Helander

Rangers are on the verge of signing Filip Helander. , Bologna defender Helander is heading to Rangers for a fee of between £4m and £4.5m.

Steven Gerrard has been looking for one more centre-back and Helander appears to be the solution. The 6ft 4in defender is a dominant and powerful centre-half who will provide good competition at the back for Rangers.

He first moved to Italy in 2015, joining Hellas Verona. He played 28 games for Verona and played nearly 100 times for Malmo before leaving Sweden.

Rangers and Bologna have agreed on a transfer fee and Helander has reportedly negotiated terms. There are only a few minor details to iron out before this deal becomes official.

Filip Helander fills last centre-back slot

Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley both left Rangers at the end of last season so Gerrard needed two new centre-backs. The Gers have already signed George Edmundson but they needed another centre-half.

Helander will become the fourth central defender on Rangers’ books if this deal goes through. The 26-year-old is at the perfect age to become a star at Rangers this season.

Rotating with Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Edmundson, Rangers will have four exciting centre-back options for the 2019/20 season.
