Report: Rangers battling Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham in four-way race
Rangers have joined the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The England international could be offered a pre-contract deal by the Gers, but they face competition from Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham.
Johnstone, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season at West Brom. An England international, he has been linked with a move to the Premier League even when the Baggies were in the Premier League last season.
His form has been excellent under Valerian Ismael this season. Clocking up 22 appearances for the Baggies so far, he has kept 11 clean sheets – only conceding 15 goals. Rangers might need a goalkeeper come the end of the season.
Allan McGregor turns 40 in January and is also out of contract in the summer. Jon McLaughlin is currently second choice but it is likely Rangers will be in the market for a goalkeeper. Johnstone could be the man they go after.
that Rangers are going to offer Johnstone a pre-contract agreement in January, with English clubs unable to do so. West Brom might prefer to keep him until the summer, rather than selling him for a fee next month.

The advantage Rangers have over the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle, is that they remain in Europe. Next season, they are nailed on to finish in the Champions League group stages – if they win the Scottish Premiership table.
West Ham have Lukasz Fabianski and Alphonse Areola – but Fabianski could need replacing, and Areola is only on loan. Tottenham are in a similar position with Hugo Lloris and Pierluigi Gollini, with the latter also on loan from Atalanta.
Whether Johnstone might be tempted to move to Scotland over the Premier League remains to be seen, but the Gers can offer Europe, Champions League and more. On a free, he would be a stunning signing.
Johnstone has the same agent as Juninho Bacuna and Calvin Bassey.
