Report: Rangers battling Blackburn, Derby and Preston for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson

Rangers are among the clubs interested in Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, .

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Dawson is attracting plenty of attention ahead of the January window. With his contract expiring in summer 2020, four clubs are monitoring his situation at Hillsborough.

Garry Monk is yet to make a decision on the future of Dawson. This has prompted Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Preston North End to take an interest. Rangers are the fourth team in the hunt.

Dawson is currently the second-choice goalkeeper at Sheffield Wednesday. Experienced Irishman Keiren Westwood has been the main stopper but Dawson has played well when called upon. He has kept four clean sheets in five games this season and has not conceded in three league outings.

The 24-year-old is a boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan but he might need to consider an exit for his own career. Dawson has played 44 times for the Owls, conceding 55 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets.

Rangers could try to land a bargain deal in January or discuss a pre-contract agreement. However, the Gers face competition from three Championship sides.

TBR’s view

Dawson is good enough to be playing regularly in the Championship but he needs an opportunity. It is unfortunate that he is competing with evergreen veteran Westwood at Sheffield Wednesday.

Rangers could be an exciting project for the 6ft 4in Englishman. Wes Foderingham could be on his way out so he will be competing with Allan McGregor at Ibrox. With McGregor entering his final stages of his playing career, Dawson would be eyeing the long-term goalkeeper spot.
