The 24-year-old scored 50 goals in 61 league appearances for Ayr. And he has started this campaign with 15 goals in 12 games in all competitions for his new club. Five of those goals have come in his last two appearances.

Rangers’s and Celtic’s scouts were in attendance for his hat-trick against Morton at the weekend. So it would be no surprise if the reports on his performance were leaving Steven Gerrard and Neil Lennon with plenty to think about ahead of the January window.

that the Scottish Championship side are set to want £2 million for the striker, who joined on a free transfer in the summer.

TBR’s View

Shankland is yet to prove himself in the Scottish Premiership. And a £2 million fee would put a fair amount of pressure on him to step up.

But Rangers and Celtic would surely be tempted by a move for that sort of fee. The likes of Alfredo Morelos and Odsonne Edouard are likely to be linked with moves away in every window from now on. So both clubs may need to think about bolstering their options.

It is intriguing that neither seemingly did more to sign him in the summer. It would have been a much smaller gamble to make their move when he was available on a free transfer.

Nevertheless, his form suggests that he could do a good job at the highest level. So it will be interesting to see if Rangers or Celtic feel that he is worth £2 million when January arrives.
