Report: Premier League side have £4m bid accepted for Celtic-linked defender
over the weekend that Celtic have suffered a big blow in their bid to replace Mikael Lustig with Luton Town star Jack Stacey, after AFC Bournemouth had a bid accepted.
earlier in the window that 23-year-old Stacey was a target for Celtic, after a stunning 2018-19 campaign in which he played a crucial role in Luton’s promotion to the Championship.
The former Reading man clocked up 50 appearances in all competitions, and scored four goals from the right side of defence as well as laying on eight assists. He also helped Luton keep an eye-catching 23 clean sheets.
Lustig left Celtic at the end of his contract and joined Belgian side Gent, while the Hoops have been linked with a whole host of right-sided defenders in George Baldock, Tommy Smith and Carl Jenkinson.
But they now look set to miss out on Stacey, after Bournemouth had a £4million bid accepted and a medical has been pencilled in for this week.
TBR’s view – Stacey would have been a good Celtic signing
Still only 23, more than willing to get forward as proven by his stats last season, and available at just £4million he would have been an excellent addition to the Celtic back line.
Perhaps the only issue is that he has little experience at the top level, which makes Huddersfield skipper Smith the better option at this stage. However, Stacey would have had better resale value.
At £4million, Celtic would not have done much better than Stacey but the lure of the Premier League has seemingly beat the Hoops again.
