Leeds may well feel that they have little chance of a deal should Liverpool enter the running. Of course, these reports evoke memories of one deal the Reds did in January.

Liverpool benefitted greatly from signing Luis Diaz in the winter. But obviously, there was a strong possibility that he could have ended up at Tottenham. Spurs initially bid £46 million for the then-Porto forward before Jurgen Klopp’s side made their move.

If Liverpool are set to get within £4 million of Porto’s asking price this time around, you would imagine that there would be a willingness from both sides to agree a deal.

Leeds may be powerless to prevent him moving to Merseyside. He would certainly have more opportunities at Elland Road. But Otavio is a ‘‘ player, and will back himself to follow in Diaz’s footsteps and be a success with Liverpool.
