Report: Pochettino joined by Atletico Madrid and Milan in race for Tottenham bargain

that Mauricio Pochettino is leading the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier with the defender boasting a bargain £8.5million release clause – but AC Milan and Atletico Madrid are also interested.

Ivory Coast captain Aurier, 28, is set to enter the last 12 months of his Tottenham contract and despite a recent up-turn in form under interim manager Ryan Mason – the chances are that he will not be handed a new contract at Spurs ahead of the summer.

That means, Spurs need to cash in this summer if they are to bring in a fee for his services and it is claimed that the ex-PSG man has a release worth just £8.5million in his contract. Pochettino is looking to take advantage and lure him back to PSG.

However, the ex-Spurs gaffer has competition in the race for Aurier from two other European heavyweights. Diego Simeone is keen to bring him in if Kieran Trippier departs, while Milan were keen last summer and could make another move.

TBR’s view – Aurier not the best, but worth more than £8.5m

Selling him for that figure, which looks likely if he does indeed have such a clause in his current deal, sees Tottenham lose money as it would cost Daniel Levy at least double that to bring in a replacement good enough to replace the loss of Aurier.

So, what is the best scenario? Aurier is inconsistent but when given the freedom to attack, he can be dangerous. Against Sheffield United, he laid on two assists. Perhaps a new deal, removing the clause and then cashing in might be best.
