Tuesday proved to be a pretty miserable evening for Antonio Conte’s side. They were far from their best in Lisbon. And they were punished right at the end of the game as they conceded twice to suffer their first defeat of the season.
Spurs did have the chances to break the deadlock beforehand. But it never really quite clicked for the visitors in open play.
And one moment typified how Tottenham were not quite at the races as Perisic looked to make a simple pass to Davies when under no pressure at all.
However, the Welshman had not made the run the Croatian expected. And with that, Perisic’s pass initially went to no-one before he was forced to deal with the situation.
, Perisic was not pleased with Davies. He gestured angrily to show that the centre-back should have been pushing forward.

In some ways, that moment and his overall performance helps show what Perisic brings to the team. The Croatian was arguably one of the only players who impressed against Sporting.
Some of the balls he put into the box were outrageous and caused real problems. And on another day, he would have had a number of assists.
But he is also setting an incredibly high standard. He expects his teammates to be on the same wavelength as him.
And in fairness, if all of the Tottenham squad had played as well as he did, Spurs would have probably had little issue going on and getting the three points.
