Report: ‘Perfect’ Tottenham player may not be fit for first game of the season now

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte could be facing a selection headache ahead of the new season, .

Davies became a key player for Conte last season as he was a mainstay on the left-hand side of the Italian’s back-three.

Conte previously heaped praise of the Wales international for his performances and said Davies’ new position was ‘perfect’ for him.

But the Italian faces being without the Welshman after he suffered an ankle injury during pre-season.

The 29-year-old faces a race to get back to full fitness in time after he landed awkwardly on his ankle during a friendly against Sevilla.

The Spurs man came back to England wearing a protective boot after the injury and has not trained this week.

It would be a blow for Conte if he is without Davies at the beginning of the season as the Italian will be looking to make a fast start to the new campaign.

Lenglet likely to start if Davies doesn’t make it

Although Davies’ injury is bad news for Spurs, they have brought in a ready-made deputy in Clement Lenglet this summer.

The Frenchman signed on a season-long loan from Barcelona and will bring a wealth of experience to Tottenham.

As a left-footed centre-back, Lenglet seems like the natural replacement for Davies in the side if the Welshman doesn’t make it back from injury.

“In the last two years, he didn’t play with the right continuity but for sure he can give us a lot of experience and personality,” he said.

“He’s good quality and then also I think with the three defenders he can give us more than to play with four at the back.”

Lenglet didn’t enjoy the best spell at Barcelona towards the end of his time at the Catalan club. The defender fell down the pecking order under Xavi and has now been sent out on loan to Spurs.

But Conte will be hoping he can recapture the promise he showed at Sevilla and become an important player for him. If Davies isn’t fit in time for the Premier League opener, Lenglet could be handed his Spurs debut a lot sooner than he imagined.
