Report: Paul Dummett desperate to extend Newcastle deal

Paul Dummett is desperate to extend his contract at Newcastle United, that he is prepared to forgo a potential pay-rise to stay on Tyneside.

Dummett, of course, has spent his entire career to date on the Magpies’ books. In fact, he is approaching 200 appearances for the club in all competitions.

As things stand, his days at St James’ Park could be numbered. The Athletic notes that he is one of the players who are out of contract at the end of the campaign.

The report claims that Newcastle have the option to extend his terms by a further year. It is suggested that however, that the former Wales international would be due a pay-rise in that event.

that Dummett is desperate to stay. Therefore, he is apparently willing to discuss a longer deal that sees him remain on his current terms rather than take the potential pay-rise.

TBR View: Dummett may be worth holding onto

As noted by The Athletic, Dummett is not the only Newcastle defender out of contract this summer. Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez could also leave on a free in the near future.

Admittedly, Dummett is not a headline-grabbing player, but it may be worth extending his terms into next year.

, he is on £35,000-a-week. And his desire to stay arguably hints that he is the kind of player Steve Bruce should keep around.

Ideally, Newcastle would be able to build a much stronger defence in the future. But keeping Dummett in the ranks still seems to be a sensible move.
