Report: Palace rivalling Leeds for Michy Batshuayi, but may struggle to afford wages

that Crystal Palace are also interested in signing Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi – joining Leeds in the race for the Belgian – but the Eagles may struggle to complete a deal.

Batshuayi, 26, has struggled for game time ever since he joined Chelsea back in 2016. Just 21 starts have since arrived in his 77 outings for the Blues – and has gone on loan to Valencia, Dortmund and Palace.

He was third choice last season behind Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham, and is even further down the pecking order since the signing of Timo Werner. Starting just five of his 24 outings in 2019-20, he still scored seven goals.

The latest report claims Leeds want to reunite Batshuayi with Marcelo Bielsa – after the duo worked together at Marseille during 2014-15 in which Batshuayi scored 10 goals, despite starting just eight of his 28 appearances.

Palace are also keen to re-sign Batshuayi, who has entered the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge. However, it is claimed Palace may struggle to afford Batshuayi’s enormous £100,000-a-week wages.

TBR’s view – Batshuayi would be ideal for both clubs

But as the report states, £100,000 a week is an enormous contract. He would easily be Leeds’ highest-paid player – and may even eclipse the current top earners by double. Palace can afford it, but it is still very expensive.

Couple that with the fact that Batshuayi is still likely to cost a sizeable transfer fee, he is an expensive signing. Though ideal, he may prove too expensive while he remains at Chelsea – unless a loan can be orchestrated.
