Report: Nottingham Forest on verge of ‘sensational’ signing, medical could be as early as Thursday

Nottingham Forest are closing in on the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi, according to .

Reds boss Steve Cooper is eyeing reinforcements up front ahead of Forest’s Premier League return.

And it looks as though Awoniyi could join the Reds ranks by the end of the week.

Nottinghamshire Live claims the Union Berlin striker will travel to England on Thursday.

A medical has been reportedly booked in for Awoniyi; this could take place on Thursday or Friday.

Earlier today, claimed the Nigeria international said goodbye to his Union teammates in training.

Awoniyi reportedly has a €20million (around £17.2million) release clause.

So, it looks as though Forest are closing in on their first two signings.

Dean Henderson is “one step away” from joining the Reds on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Meanwhile, Forest could well be about to break their club transfer record to sign Awoniyi.

The Reds’ current record fee stands at , which they paid Benfica for Joao Carvalho in 2018.

Forest will be getting themselves a top talent in Awoniyi.

He has done so well at Union that ranked him at number 14 in their top 50 players of all time.

Awoniyi joined the Bundesliga outfit on loan from Liverpool in 2020 and signed permanently the following year.

During his time on the books at Anfield, Awoniyi had seven loan spells.

One of those was at Mainz, where then boss Achim Beierlorzer called him ‘sensational’().

He never played a first-team game for Liverpool, but his permanent move to Union has earned him plenty of admirers.

The 24-year-old has 25 goals and nine assists from 65 Union appearances.

Last season, Awoniyi registered 20 goals in all competitions for the German capital club, including 15 in the league.

His efforts helped Union finish fifth in the Bundesliga and qualify for the Europa League.

Awoniyi – who has been to Erling Braut Haaland – has also won three caps for Nigeria, scoring once.
