Report: Nottingham Forest in talks over signing £17.2m striker who’s been compared to Haaland
Nottingham Forest have begun talks over signing Union Berlin’s Taiwo Awoniyi, according to .
Reds boss Steve Cooper is eyeing reinforcements up front ahead of Forest’s Premier League return.
At present, Forest are in talks with Lewis Grabban over a new contract.
Cooper has just two other strikers – Sam Surridge and Lyle Taylor – with deals beyond the summer.
Awoniyi, who reportedly has a €20m (£17.2m) release clause, is a great shout for the City Ground outfit.
He has done so well at Union that ranked him at number 14 in their top 50 players of all time.
Awoniyi joined the Bundesliga outfit on loan from Liverpool in 2020 and signed permanently the following year.
During his time on the books at Anfield, Awoniyi had seven loan spells, at clubs in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
He never played a first-team game for Liverpool, but his permanent move to Union has earned him plenty of admirers.
The 24-year-old has 25 goals and nine assists from 65 Union appearances.
Last season, Awoniyi registered 20 goals in all competitions for the German capital club, including 15 in the league.
His efforts helped Union finish fifth in the Bundesliga and qualify for the Europa League.
Awoniyi has also won three caps for Nigeria, scoring once.
“He could suit Liverpool”
Last year, German football expert Constantin Eckner compared Awoniyi to Manchester City newcomer Erling Braut Haaland.
Speaking on the (via the ), he said: “In a way, he reminds me a little bit of Erling Haaland, at least in terms of the runs he makes behind the line.
“He is nowhere near the level of Haaland but his style is similar!
“He’s a decent finisher in the box. He fits Union Berlin’s style really well but I am not sure whether he has enough to work well at Liverpool.
“In terms of style, he could suit Liverpool. Roberto Firmino drops in and doesn’t make the runs in behind as much so having someone who maybe makes these runs can be what Jurgen Klopp likes.
“Maybe that is where he could fit in but there are other strikers out there similar to Awoniyi who promise more right away. Awoniyi would be a project and maybe he would get lost.
“But he has scored some goals for a good team in the Bundesliga and that can up your value in the transfer market.”
