Report: Newcastle want to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet

that Newcastle United are reportedly looking to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet in January.

The report claims Newcastle’s new owners want to sign a left-footed centre-back in the upcoming window – before spending big next summer.

It is believed that the consortium, consisting of Saudi Arabia’s PIF, Amanda Staveley’s Capital Partners and the Reuben Brothers, like Lenglet.

Lenglet, 26, has started just one of Barcelona’s seven La Liga matches so far He has also come on as a sub in three others, totalling less than 10 minutes.

The France international joined Barcelona in the summer of 2018 for £32million from Sevilla, clocking up 137 appearances since then.

But he has fallen out of favour and given Barca’s financial issues, he is unlikely to cost much. he has a release clause worth £265million.

Newcastle eye Lenglet: A brilliant signing for the new owners

Just because he has fallen out of favour, does not make Lenglet a bad player. On his day, he is one of the best left-footed centre-backs in Europe.

Newcastle do need a left-footed centre-back. Ciaran Clark is their only example, but the Ireland international is hardly seen as a long-term answer.

Indeed, when Newcastle gained promotion, many expected Clark to go. But a lack of investment has seen the likes of Clark continue at Newcastle.

Bringing in Lenglet would solve a Newcastle issue, improve the defence but also capture the excitement of fans. He could be value for money, too.
