Report: Newcastle United officials actually held talks with ‘top-class’ free agent, but Eddie Howe decided against the move

Newcastle United officials actually held talks with free agent Ben Foster but Eddie Howe decided against the move, .

The Magpies have found themselves in need of a goalkeeper after the end of the transfer window due to an injury to Karl Darlow.

Nick Pope only arrived from Burnley this summer and has quickly become Howe’s first-choice goalkeeper.

But Newcastle allowed Martin Dubravka to make a loan switch to Manchester United and now they are in the market to sign a free agent.

And it seems that the club were eyeing a possible move for Foster.

Newcastle officials held talks with Foster

.

The 39-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by Watford.

But Howe has apparently decided against the move as he favours ex-Liverpool shot stopper Loris Karius.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle are on the verge of signing Karius and it could be announced soon.

But it seems that Foster was an option for Howe’s men as they look to bring in a back-up option to Pope.

Foster’s former boss Roy Hodgson heaped praise on him after a goalless draw at Old Trafford last season.

“It’s always going to be hard-fought draw here,” Hodgson told .

“We have a real top-class goalkeeper, certainly Premiership class and possibly above that.

“If you going to play up here, as we did today with the team we had to put out, you are going to need Ben Foster because there is no way we can be good enough to restrict them to not even one chance in the game.”

Foster would have certainly been a decent back-up option for Howe if the Magpies had decided to go for him over Karius.

The former England international is an experienced shot stopper and has played in the Premier League throughout his career.

But it seems that Howe preferred a move for Karius and the deal could be announced in the coming days.

Foster remains without a club and it will be interesting to see if the goalkeeper decides to carry on playing.
