Report: Newcastle United now leading race for ‘world-class’ striker again, they offered him deal before Isak signed
Newcastle United are reportedly leading the race to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay.
Depay was a summer transfer target for Newcastle, as his Barcelona future was in the balance.
In fact, Depay was on Newcastle’s radar before they signed Alexander Isak for a club-record fee.
reported that Depay was offered a deal before Isak arrived at St. James’ Park.

The ‘world-class’ forward has made just two appearances in La Liga this season.
After finding himself benched for the first four games of the season, Xavi finally gave him a chance against Cadiz.
He then scored his first goal of the season against Elche a week later.
Depay will be going to the World Cup with the Netherlands, but will be looking for a way out of the club shortly.
His contract runs out in the summer, but Barcelona would likely be happy to let him go six months earlier if they can earn a fee for Depay.
Newcastle leading the race to sign Depay
Depay has a fantastic scoring rate for his national team, and was brilliant for Olympique Lyon.
The 28-year-old is approaching half a century of international goals, and already has 80 caps.
However, his time at Barcelona has not gone as well as he would have hoped.
Signed by fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman as a replacement for Lionel Messi, he’s never hit the heights he would have liked.

Koeman’s sacking was bad news for Depay, who never got going under new manager Xavi.
If Eddie Howe’s side do sign Depay, it would give him another chance to impress in England after a poor spell at Manchester United.
Newcastle are currently leading the race for Depay, but plenty can change before the window opens in January.
