Report: Newcastle United ‘certain’ over one signing they’re going to make in January, have two man shortlist already

Newcastle United are ‘certain’ over one signing they’re going to make in January, with reporting they will target a right-back.

The Magpies headed into the World Cup as one of the best teams in the Premier League in terms of their recent form.

Eddie Howe’s men haven’t tasted defeat since September and currently sit third in the table. They have emerged as a surprising contender for a spot in the top four and Howe will be keen to bolster his squad to maintain their position in the league.

And they’ve already made up a two-man shortlist for the right-back position, with the Mail claiming they are targeting West Ham’s Harrison Ashby and Leeds United’s Cody Drameh.

Newcastle certain over right-back signing

that Newcastle tried to sign Ashby over the summer but he ended up staying in east London at the last minute before the deadline.

The 21-year-old’s future at West Ham looks uncertain as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Newcastle could be tempted to move for the Scotsman in January as he could be available on a cut-price deal.

Drameh has also been linked with a move to St James’ Park and the Leeds youngster has already racked up seven first-team appearances at Elland Road.

The 20-year-old has been identified as a possible target for Borussia Dortmund in January, with reporting that the Bundesliga outfit and Newcaslte are keen on the English full-back.

Of course, Howe already has a brilliant option in Kieran Trippier for the right-back position but he certainly lacks depth in the area.

While Trippier is showing no signs of slowing down, it seems smart that Newcastle are thinking of bringing in a younger player to deputise for the England international.

At 32, Trippier has been a standout performer for Howe’s men this season but it will benefit the Newcastle boss massively to have another quality option at right-back.
