Report: Newcastle to bid for £15m colossus Shearer has deemed ‘commanding’ if Burn efforts fall flat

Newcastle United have brought in a new striker and a new right-back, and could soon be getting a new midfielder.

However, a centre-back continues to elude the Magpies for the time being.

Newcastle’s defence has struggled this season, the Magpies shipping 43 goals in 21 Premier League games.

With just over three days left in the January transfer window, Newcastle haven’t got long to grab a new centre-back.

According to , the Magpies have Brighton’s Dan Burn in their sights.

The Seagulls rejected Newcastle’s opening bid but could make a second offer soon, claimed the report.

However, if the Magpies fail to make any progress with Burn, then they could make a bid for Liverpool’s Nat Phillips.

Earlier this week, the reported that Newcastle have asked the Anfield outfit about Phillips.

However, Liverpool reportedly turned down the Magpies’ proposal of an initial loan stint.

The Athletic claims “an offer” for Phillips is “potentially forthcoming should Brighton refuse to engage over Burn.”

While this doesn’t specify what kind of offer it would be, Newcastle already know Liverpool aren’t interested in a loan.

A separate report in claims the Reds want £15million for the 24-year-old as they look to raise funds.

Phillips is a fan favourite at Liverpool for how he stepped up during their defensive crisis last season.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has waxed lyrical about the 6ft 3in colossus in the past.

He chose the reported Magpies target as his Man of the Match against Burnley last May.

As well as getting on the scoresheet, Phillips did a superb job in keeping a clean sheet en route to a 3-0 win.

“It was a bit of a tricky start for Nat Phillips,” he told .

“But after that, once he settled down, he was the best player on the park.

“He was commanding, did everything he had to do very well.”

Newcastle really ought to push for Phillips as he ticks a lot of boxes.

He’s proven in the Premier League, has shown he can play at the highest level, is only 24, and at £15million, he’d be a bargain.
