Report: Newcastle table £34m, midfielder would be second most-expensive signing

that Newcastle United have tabled an offer worth £34million to sign Lyon star Lucas Paqueta. However, the offer has been turned down by Lyon – who are desperate to keep their Brazilian ace.

Paqueta, 24, has been in stunning form for club and country of late. He has produced 11 goal involvements in 21 league and cup appearances for Lyon – while also becoming a Brazil regular, clocking up 28 caps for his country.

So much so, that Newcastle have become interested. Earlier this week, that Newcastle had tabled a contract offer to Paqueta worth an extraordinary £165,000 a week – but Paqueta wants to stay at Lyon.

Now, it looks as if Lyon are ready to keep him and ignore Newcastle’s advances too. Newcastle have made an offer of £34million – which would make Paqueta the club’s second-biggest signing, behind Joelinton.

But the report also states that Lyon have opted to turn it down, with Paqueta keen to stay – even though there was a willingness from Newcastle to go higher. There could be more to this story in the coming weeks.

Newcastle bid for Paqueta: Brazilian would be a stunning signing

He would be a brilliant signing for most Premier League clubs. The performances he is churning out, the flair, the creativity, the magic coming out of nothing – he is a player with supreme quality. At just 24.

A fee of anything less than £50million for Paqueta will be seen as good business in the next couple of years. But should it be a priority for the Toon? It would certainly excite fans, but Eddie Howe needs defensive reinforcements first.
