Report: Newcastle spent days trying to sign ‘fantastic’ player in January

Newcastle United spent several days trying to convince Lucas Digne to move to Tyneside during the January transfer window, despite the Frenchman making it clear that he had no interest in joining the Magpies – .

It proved to be a hugely productive month for Eddie Howe’s side. They notched up their second Premier League win of the season just before the break. And they now have a number of new signings through the door.

For some, there may be some disappointment over the players they reportedly missed out on. And one of those who did not make the move to St James’ Park was Digne.

The left-back left Everton following a falling out with former boss Rafa Benitez. He signed for Aston Villa in a deal worth up to .

But that move only came about after Newcastle had made a huge play to sign Digne. that they spent several days trying to convince the defender to make the move.

However, the report labels their bid to sign Digne one of their most ‘puzzling’ pursuits of the window. That is because the player’s entourage made it clear to Newcastle that he had no interest in joining them.

Newcastle still benefit from Lucas Digne snub

Obviously, there is likely to be frustration for some at Newcastle that they did not sign Digne. As Marco Silva previously suggested, he is a ‘‘ player.

However, his decision to join Aston Villa came with one clear upside.

One of Newcastle’s deadline day moves involved getting Matt Targett in on loan from Steven Gerrard’s side.

Without Digne moving to Villa Park, Targett would have surely ended up staying put this month.

The Englishman now arrives with a point to prove having lost his place to the man Newcastle seemingly wanted themselves.
