Report: Newcastle set to miss out on Wesley Moraes amid Rafa Benitez uncertainty

Newcastle United are set to be handed some early transfer window disappointment. Due to uncertainty surrounding Rafa Benitez’s future and the Bin Zayed Group’s reported takeover, Wesley Moraes favours a move elsewhere, .

Wesley wanted to team up with Benitez at Newcastle. This was the Club Brugge striker’s preferred option ahead of the 2019/20 season as he weighs up his offers.

But he does not want to join Newcastle until the immediate future of the club has been resolved. Lazio have now moved into pole position to sign Wesley.

The Brazilian forward was seen as the striker solution at St James’ Park. With doubt surrounding the futures of Ayoze Perez and former loan star Salomon Rondon, Newcastle wanted a new striker.

Wesley fit the bill as a 6ft 3in physical centre-forward. Last season, he impressed with a haul of 17 goals and 10 assists in 48 games. This has put him on the radar of several clubs across Europe.

But Newcastle could now miss out on Wesley. The 22-year-old will weigh up his other options with West Ham named among the other potential suitors.

TBR’s view

Newcastle need a new striker as a matter of urgency, particularly if Perez departs. Rondon will be the top target but Wesley was seen as an impressive alternative.

He is young, tall, strong and has a decent goalscoring record. But Newcastle now need to scour the market for alternative options.

But the Magpies might struggle to convince any players to join until the takeover and Benitez’s future is resolved, though.
