Report: Newcastle prepared to make bid for Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy

Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to make an offer this month for Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy.

, the Magpies are ready to submit a bid for the 30-year-old.

It is explained that Newcastle boss Steve Bruce is a ban fan of the Irishman, who he’s tried to sign on several occasions during his career as a manager.

The report adds that Scottish giants Celtic want to open talks for a deal to bring him to Parkhead, but they are struggling with the financial side of any offer.

Meanwhile, Premier League Burnley, Sheffield United and West Brom are also credited with interest in the £50,000-a-week () Palace star.

McCarthy has played just six games across all competitions so far this season, but he’s got plenty of experience having made 261 Premier League appearances in his career.

He’s an all-action central midfielder that is technically sound, aggressive in his tackling and he reads the game well.

TBR’s View:

Despite being a solid performer, McCarthy is hardly a signing that would get Newcastle fans off their seat.

Extra legs in the centre of the park would be a real bonus for Newcastle and he’d perhaps bring a bit more of a physical presence, but he doesn’t have the spark they are crying out for.

A box-to-box central midfielder that can score goals should be on the agenda to bring to St James’ Park in the January window and it’ll be intriguing to see who else is linked before the month ends, as supporters are growing frustrated.
