Report: Newcastle ponder £2m move for ex-Premier League player Steven Caulker

Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of bringing forgotten man Steven Caulker back to England. , Newcastle could launch a £2m move for Caulker, who is currently playing for Alanyaspor in Turkey.

Caulker previously played for Cardiff City, QPR, Southampton, Liverpool and Dundee after coming through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur. The former Great Britain defender, who earned one senior cap for England, has not played in England since being released by QPR in 2017.

After a few difficult years, where he suffered from off-the-field problems, Caulker moved to Turkey in January 2019. The 27-year-old has reignited his stalling career in the Turkish Super Lig and is now attracting attention again.

Fenerbahce are reportedly keen on Caulker but face competition from Newcastle. Steve Bruce is said to be a big fan and he has been keeping his tabs on Caulker’s fitness over pre-season ahead of a potential £2m move.

TBR’s view

This is one to avoid for Bruce and Newcastle. Caulker is not worth the risk, even at just £2m. Moreover, Newcastle do not need a new central defender.

Florian Lejeune, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett can all play at centre-back. Instead, Bruce needs to be looking at signing a new full-back. Despite his low price tag, Caulker would struggle to break into the Newcastle starting line-up and the Magpies should look elsewhere.
