Report: Newcastle now want to sign World Cup star who Cristiano Ronaldo called ‘excellent’

Newcastle United are now among the clubs eyeing a January swoop for Portuguese World Cup forward Joao Felix.

report that Magpies boss Eddie Howe wants to know more about the 23-year-old before deciding whether to enter the race for him.

Felix wants to leave Atletico Madrid as soon as possible but the report says Manchester United is his preferred destination.

They are of course trying to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who is Felix’s international teammate and right now, a free agent, too.

Newcastle eyeing Felix

Ronaldo has previously praised Felix, as per : “He is an excellent player with a lot of potential and a lot to evolve.”

From Newcastle’s point of view, they think Felix may be reluctant to join a club outside the Champions League and at the start of their project.

But both of those things apply to Manchester United right now, so it remains to be seen what Felix decides to do and how hard he pushes for a move.

The other thing is that Newcastle have so far shied away from this type of move since the takeover; a high-earning outcast from an elite club.

They have preferred hungry players who are generally on the way up, although they did take Kieran Trippier from Atletico in January.

It seems more likely that a James Maddison type would be the next through the door at Newcastle, and they may well manage their finances prudently mid-season, before going big again next summer.
