Report: Newcastle now offer Manchester United the chance to sign ‘terrific’ player from them

Newcastle will offer goalkeeper Karl Darlow to Manchester United to try and get Dean Henderson to Tyneside.

report that the Magpies are trying to put a deal together which works for all parties as they look to upgrade in the goalkeeping department.

Henderson is a target on loan as Eddie Howe looks to continue the improvement he has brought about at Newcastle since his appointment.

The England international has had a season of stagnation, stuck behind David de Gea in the Old Trafford pecking order, which has seen him drift down Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.

Newcastle offer Darlow to Manchester United

Their report says: “Newcastle are set to offer Karl Darlow to Manchester United as part of a deal to land Dean Henderson.

Henderson is only keen on a season-long loan move to St James’ believing he will one day get the gloves at Old Trafford ahead of David de Gea.

Newcastle hope the offer of their current number two Darlow who played eight Premier League games this season, will help to push the deal over the line with new boss Erik ten Hag in need of another goalkeeper.

If Henderson went the other way and with Lee Grant announcing his retirement, Manchester United would have only Tom Heaton as back up to De Gea so would need another experienced goalkeeper and 31-year-old Darlow fits the bill.

Would United take Darlow on? There might be a vacancy in the goalkeeping department but Erik ten Hag has come in and will want to shape his squad.

He would likely want to handpick any new goalkeeper rather than take one who is being offered to him by another domestic rival.

That is especially true if Henderson only leaves on loan, because it could create an issue further down the line next summer.

Darlow was hailed as ‘‘ by Old Trafford legend Steve Bruce when he was Newcastle boss, but Henderson would be a clear upgrade.
