Report: Newcastle make enquiry to sign Manchester United defender in January
that Newcastle United have approached Manchester United to sign defender Phil Jones. The England international is looking for a new club, having last played back in January 2020.
Jones, 29, has flown down the pecking order during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign. His last appearance came in a 6-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup – in which the 27-time England international scored.
The signings of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and others has pushed Jones down the pecking order. The ex-Blackburn defender has a contract at United until the summer of 2023 – worth £75,000 a week ().
Benfica are looking to hand Jones an escape route, by luring him to Portugal on loan. Benfica do already have the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Nicolas Otamendi on the books.

Newcastle eye Jones: Is Manchester United outcast what the Toon need?
What Newcastle are going to find in January, is that players will want to avoid joining the club – with Eddie Howe’s side in 19th. Even with their mass financial power, they might fail to convince players in January.
That might force them to look at loans, players out of contract in June, or completely ostracised reserve players. Jones is the latter, but he has the Premier League experience that might just help the Toon in their relegation battle.
