Report: Newcastle make enquiry for striker who scored two PL goals last term
that Newcastle United are one of four Premier League sides to have asked Huddersfield Town about striker Steve Mounie, following the Terriers’ relegation to the Championship.
Since dropping back into the Championship, a handful of Huddersfield’s star players have been linked with moves including Tommy Smith, Terence Kongolo, Mathias Jorgensen, Aaron Mooy and now Mounie.
Mounie, 24, managed just two Premier League goals in 31 appearances for his side last season – though 13 of those league appearances did come from the substitutes bench.
However, Newcastle are interested in the 13-time Benin international despite his lack of goals, as The Toon draw up replacements for Salomon Rondon – as it becomes increasingly likely that he will not stay at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle have asked about Mounie, just two seasons after Mounie joined Huddersfield from Montpellier for £12million (). Watford, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace have also made enquiries.
TBR’s view – Mounie not as good as Rondon for Newcastle
Mounie impressed in his first season for Huddersfield, scoring nine goals in 31 outings as he helped the club avoid relegation to the Championship. But second time around, the Terriers and Mounie struggled.
A lack of service, momentum and confidence affected the African striker. At Newcastle, he is unlikely to get any more service than he did at Huddersfield. Rondon shone as the club’s talisman, making things happen by himself.
It proves that Rondon is a much more effective forward than Mounie and although similar in build and style of play, Rondon can create something out of nothing while Mounie needs help.
