Report: Newcastle make £17.5m bid for Memphis Depay

Newcastle United appear to have confirmed their interest in signing Memphis Depay during the January transfer window, that they have now bid £17.5 million for the Barcelona forward.

Depay may well be on the move in one of the next two windows. The Barca star’s contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season after he only penned a two-year deal when joining in 2021.

Clubs outside Spain will be able to discuss a pre-contract deal with Depay from next month. But it seems that Newcastle have looked to steal a march on their potential rivals for his signature.

Newcastle make Depay bid

Reports from this week claimed that the Magpies had been offered Depay. And with Eddie Howe very interested in the 28-year-old, talks were set to be held in the coming days.

Mundo Deportivo is now claiming that that interest has gone a lot further. In fact, their report states that Newcastle have now made a £17.5 million bid for the forward.

But there is a problem for the Magpies.

that Barcelona would prefer to sell Depay in January rather than lose him on a free transfer. However, the Dutchman is not looking to leave Catalonia until the summer. So it would appear that both Newcastle and Barca may have some work to do to agree a deal.

Signing Depay in January would be a real statement from Newcastle. He has a decent record from his time at Barca. And he was absolutely outstanding for Lyon before that.

He can play almost anywhere across the forward line. And he does appear to be something of a leader as one of the more senior players within the Dutch national team.

Depay would be a ‘‘ signing for Newcastle next month. And it seems that the Magpies are determined to do all they can to make it happen.
