Report: Newcastle leading Leeds and Everton in race to sign Chelsea star Barkley

Newcastle are leading Everton and Leeds in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley in January – with a loan-to-buy deal likely.

Barkley, 27, is struggling for game time at Chelsea. Barkley has played less than 250 minutes – spread across eight appearances for the Blues in 21-22.

The England international has a contract at Chelsea until the summer of 2023. It means that Chelsea may have to think about selling him.

That, or hand him a new deal. But the latter seems unlikely. He failed to impress on loan at Aston Villa, scoring just three goals in 24 games.

A January move is likely for the Chelsea ace, who is earning £96,000 a week in West London. Three Premier League clubs are interested.

Newcastle, Leeds and Everton are all keen and have been linked – but the new report states that Eddie Howe’s Toon are leading the charge for him.

Chelsea ace Barkley – Leeds, Newcastle or Everton in January?

All three clubs need an attacking midfielder. Everton lack options in that area, with James Rodriguez leaving the club to move to the middle east.

Would a return to Everton be beneficial for Barkley? Without doubt. But would Everton take him back? That is a different question altogether.

Newcastle have the money to spend to afford a player like Barkley’s wages. They could win the race by offering a big more of a loan fee, a bigger clause.

Leeds also need a 10 and playing under the influence of Marcelo Bielsa in such an attacking side might tempt Barkley. All moves would benefit him.
