Report: Newcastle interested in another Chelsea player

(14 June, p72), Newcastle United are interested in raiding Chelsea for experienced left-back Marcos Alonso this summer – as Frank Lampard continues his pursuit of Leicester City ace Ben Chilwell.

Alonso, 29, has clocked up 140 appearances for Chelsea since his move to Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina in the summer of 2016. Scoring 22 times and creating 17 more, the Spain international is renowned as a set-piece specialist.

However, his future at the club is in enormous doubt as Lampard looks to bring in a new left-back. The Blues boss is trying to sign Chilwell, but Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and Porto’s Alex Telles are also options.

Talks have already begun between Newcastle and Chelsea, as per the report, with The Blues rating Alonso at a price of £26million. A deal will only go through if a Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle finally comes to fruition.

TBR’s view – Alonso would be a stunning Newcastle addition

Somewhat underrated in a strong Chelsea side, Alonso has the ability to get forward and score goal after goal. With Steve Bruce preferring a three-man defence, that would allow Alonso to play as a wing-back.

If the Spaniard can form a partnership with Allan Saint-Maximin, then the Toon could boast one of the best left-sided flanks in the Premier League. At £26million, he is quite expensive, but certainly worth the outlay.

However, such a deal may see Newcastle avoid a permanent deal for Danny Rose from Tottenham – and perhaps more frustratingly for Toon supporters, a deal for Jetro Willems.
