Report: Newcastle have made £10m offer for player Sir Alex Ferguson called ‘outstanding’

Newcastle United have signed a new right-back and a new striker. Now they’re looking into landing a new centre-back.

The Magpies are in their first transfer window following their long-awaited takeover.

As such, Newcastle have a sizeable war-chest, but must also recruit wisely in pursuit of Premier League safety.

Therefore, the Magpies could do with players who have experience in the English top flight.

Now, it looks as though Newcastle have tested the waters with a Premier League veteran who Sir Alex Ferguson has previously deemed “outstanding”.

According to , the Magpies have attempted to make a move for Roma’s Chris Smalling.

The Italian outlet – via – claims Newcastle ‘had thought of entrusting the role of leader of a defence that is leaking from all sides’.

They also claim the Magpies had offered £10million and drafted up a contract until 2024 for Smalling.

But despite Roma having the chance to make a ‘real capital gain’ on a player they bought for an initial £12million a year-and-a-half ago, they ‘returned everything to sender’.

This is because Jose Mourinho considers Smalling a key member of his defence. Also, he doesn’t fancy delving into the January market, added the report.

Newcastle are seemingly getting the hang of initial rejections and drawn-out negotiations. But with half the transfer window to go, there could be more twists and turns.

“I had no doubts about him”

Smalling spent nine years playing for Manchester United, clocking up 323 competitive appearances and winning multiple trophies including two Premier League titles.

In 2011, Ferguson told Inside United, via : “We are very pleased with his performances.

It’s an outstanding contribution he has made. But, do you know, I expected him to do well. I had no doubts about him.

“He’s done really well for us and he is improving all the time. He is developing all aspects of his game because he wants to learn and improve.

“He likes defending, he enjoys it. So he’s a real bonus.”
