Report: Newcastle have £10m loan-to-buy bid rejected for Sporting Lisbon star

Newcastle United have seen a loan-to-buy bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes rejected by the Portuguese side, according to newspaper – despite the inclusion of an obligatory purchase in the summer.

Nunes, 22, has been a regular for Sporting Lisbon this season – clocking up 22 appearances in all competitions for the Liga NOS giants. It comes after he broke into the side last term, playing just 32 times at senior level for Sporting.

His performances have not gone unnoticed. Newcastle have tabled a deal that would see Brazilian star Nunes join the Toon on loan until the end of the season – and were willing to include a £10million obligatory deal in the summer.

However, given his importance to league leaders Sporting this season, they have rejected the offer. It remains to be seen if Newcastle will return with an improved offer for Nunes – though they will have to move quickly.

TBR’s view – Nunes would be a decent addition

Quick, attacking and nimble, he is what Newcastle lack in central midfield. The likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff – they slow the game down and reduce the tempo in a side that play on the counter attack. The tempo should be high.

So, Nunes would be the ideal kind of signing for Steve Bruce’s beleaguered Toon. Whether they get him remains to be seen, but it should be encouraging for Toon supporters that they are pursuing options.
