Report: Newcastle enter race for Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in defender Domagoj Vida from Turkish top-flight club Besiktas.

, Steve Bruce’s team have joined the race the centre-back alongside  Brighton, Norwich City and West Ham.

It is understood that Newcastle and Brighton could end up making an ÂŁ8.5million bid for him.

The 30-year-old is an experienced centre-back that has played at a decent level throughout his career, but rose to fame by helping Croatia finish runners-up in the 2018 World Cup.

Vida is playing for Super Lig outfit Besiktas this season and is an ever-present in their XI.

The powerhouse defender looks like he has the tools to be a hit in English football, despite his side losing twice so far this season to Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Europa League group stages.

He has earned 79 senior international caps and formed a solid partnership next to Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren.

TBR’s View:

Vida is a no-nonsense defender could definitely be a hit for a team in the Premier League and it’s easy to picture him slotting into the organised backline at St JamesPark.

But Newcastle are stacked with quality defensive options in their squad and it would make little sense to chase the Besiktas star.

They should focus their attention on improving in attack and need to make sure they are a side that score regular goals to keep them climbing the league table.
