Ter Stegen, 29, has been a regular for the Catalan club and has started every since coming back from injury this season. A Champions League winner, the German also has 26 caps for his country.

Impressively, Ter Stegen is approaching the game mark for Barcelona.

Newcastle with former Bournemouth manager Howe yesterday. It will bring an end to the search for a replacement for Steve Bruce.

TBR’s View: Do Newcastle really need Ter Stegen?

The answer to that is probably not at the moment. It’s one area where the club actually do have some decent quality. Martin Dubravka is excellent albeit injury prone at times, while Karl Darlow has also done well at times.

Newcastle also has Freddie Woodman on the books, so it’s not like they’re short of options. In short, you get the feeling landing Ter Stegen in January would be more of a vanity signing for the Toon.

The transfers are bound to start flowing in Newcastle soon. But using around £50m on a goalkeeper who might not even be needed, would be a questionable decision.
