Report: Newcastle look to battle West Ham for 28-goal Championship forward

West Ham United and Newcastle United are interested in making a move for Blackburn striker Adam Armstrong after the star’s season in the Championship this term.

According to , the Hammers and relegated Fulham are leading the race for the center-forward with Rovers attempted to convince the 24-year-old to sign a new deal at Ewood Park.

The same report is claiming that the Geordies could make an offer for their former academy graduate, who left the club back in 2018.

Newcastle are also thought to have a sell-on clause negotiated into the ace’s current contract, which has just a year left to run on it.

Armstrong has enjoyed a stunning campaign in the second-tier of English football, scoring 28 goals, second only to Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who struck a record-breaking during the regular season.

TBR View: Sometimes pride needs to be swallowed

There are times during a club’s history where they’ll have to swallow their pride and admit they made a mistake.

In Newcastle’s case, letting one of their very own leave St James’ Park seems to have been a huge mistake given how well the striker has performed this season.

His performances have made the world of difference for the Blue and Whites, who won a staggering thanks to the ace’s goal contributions, a third of the club’s entire points tally.

Manchester United are a club, in recent memory, that swallowed their pride after re-signing Paul Pogba, a player playing in their academy just four years earlier. And while there’s an undoubted difference in quality between the Frenchman and the Englishman, the concept remains the same.

Steve Bruce’s side haven’t had much joy with number nines in recent years. Callum Wilson has come into great effect but has struggled due to injury problems, meanwhile, Joelinton has proven a £40m flop.

With just a year left on his contract, Armstrong would prove a cheap option that can provide both competition and great depth to the northeast giants.
