Report: Newcastle and Leeds-linked midfielder set to join new club

that Serie A side Cagliari are to win the race for Boca Juniors midfielder Nahitan Nandez, amid reports linking the midfielder with Leeds and Newcastle.

Nandez, 23, has shot to stardom after impressing for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup before playing for Boca in the Copa Libertadores at the back end of last season – which was staged at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu.

The pocket-sized midfielder is known for his tenacity in the middle of the park, but also his impeccable technique and his ability to chip in in the final third. In 53 games for Boca, he has six goals and eight assists.

Di Marzio has reported that Nandez is joining Cagliari for £15million. Earlier this year, Newcastle were interested in the 27-time international, while

A deal is yet to be agreed between Cagliari and Boca but talks are believed to be in their final stages and a fee of £15million has been agreed between the Italians and Argentines.

TBR’s view – Leeds and Newcastle should regret Nandez failure

Newcastle could have done with Nandez, more so than Leeds. The Toon are in desperate need for central midfielders, after Mo Diame left the club and Sean Longstaff continues to be linked with Manchester United.

The likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yueng struggled last season and they are hardly deemed good enough, leaving Steve Bruce with just Isaac Hayden and Longstaff to choose from at the moment.

Leeds could have also done with Nandez, though the £15million price tag would be beyond their reach. Nandez is likely to impress in European football, and he boasts the necessary quality to reach Champions League level.
