Report: Newcastle in January mix for £130k-a-week title-winner

According to reports this weekend, Newcastle United remain among more than ten clubs keen on signing Manchester United defender, Phil Jones.

reports how Newcastle, along with Premier League Watford, head up a host of clubs which could be up to 13 strong. Among them are a number of Championship sides.

Jones, who is still only 29, has had a horror time of things with Manchester United in recent seasons. Injuries have ruined his career, and he’s never quite kicked on since signing from Blackburn.

However, he is still regarded as a defender with Premier League quality. Jones has won the Premier League and Europa League while at Old Trafford, with England caps coming too. It goes without saying, then, that he is good enough for the top division when injury free.

Newcastle’s interest stems from their takeover. The Magpies are expected to sign a number of players in January. The club is thought to be keen on bringing in experienced PL players who can help fight relegation.

TBR’s View: Surely Newcastle can aim higher than Phil Jones

If this was Newcastle signing a fully fit Phil Jones who had been playing regularly for United, then you could understand it. But surely they won’t take a punt on him now?

Further, it would be a seriously underwhelming signing for the Toon Army to swallow. Jones, for all his experience and ability when fit, has had an absolute nightmare the last three seasons. Mentally, there is an argument that he’ll ever get back to his very best.

Newcastle need to target better players and frankly, more reliable ones.
