Report: The two high-profile managers in pole position for Newcastle job
With Newcastle United on the verge of a takeover, the Magpies have been linked with several high-profile players and coaches amid the prospect of St James’ Park having a huge budget going forward.
PCP Capital Partners, headed by Amanda Staveley, have brokered the £300million deal, which is being backed by the Saudi Arabian royal family’s Public Investment Fund, and the prospective new owners are expected to have major ambitions upon arriving at St. James’ Park.
reported last week that Mauricio Pochettino, Massimiliano Allegri, Rafael Benitez and Lucien Favre were in the frame to replace Steve Bruce in the Newcastle dugout, and now, French outlet have claimed that Pochettino and Benitez are in pole position for the job.
TBR View:
Pochettino is obviously well known to fans of English football for transforming Tottenham Hotspur from a fairly modest outfit often in the shadow of North London rivals Arsenal to a side in the race for the Premier League title that reached the final of the Champions League last term.
Benitez, meanwhile, needs no introduction on Tyneside – one of the most loved Newcastle coaches in recent memory, whose departure from SJP last summer was gutting for most of the fanbase to say the least.
reports that it would take a world-record £20million to buy the Spaniard out of his contract at Dalian Yifang, but given the Saudi PIF is believed to control assets worth around £320billion, it’s more than plausible – and the move would be a surefire hit to instantly win the Toon Army over.
