Rangers are set to open the door for a number of their players to leave Ibrox in January, five players who could move on when the window opens.
Steven Gerrard is seemingly looking to trim his squad. And it appears that a number of the players closer to the fringes of the side will be given the green light to look at other options.
that Jamie Murphy, Matt Polster, Greg Docherty and Wes Foderingham could all be on the move when January arrives. It is also suggested that Andy King’s loan from Leicester City will be terminated.
The Record notes that Murphy, Docherty and Polster could leave on loan or on a permanent basis. Foderingham meanwhile, is out of contract in the summer.
And there is plenty of interest in some of the players. The Record suggests that Murphy is wanted by Motherwell and Stoke City, Docherty is back on Shrewsbury’s radar, and Foderingham is attracting attention from Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough.
TBR View – Ruthless decision necessary
There is likely to be at least one name amongst the quintet that each member of the fanbase would be disappointed to see leave the club in January if they do go.
Docherty, in particular, has always been a popular member of the side amongst the fans. And there was a real sense after his loan last season that he could kick on. Unfortunately, that has not happened.
It may be a ruthless move to let the players leave. But it also looks to be probably the right decision from Gerrard.
Foderingham boasts the most starts this season of the five, with just four in all competitions.
It remains to be seen if any – other than King – leave permanently. But if they do, perhaps they may help Gerrard secure a boost to his January kitty.
