Report: Memphis Depay offered to Newcastle; but Howe’s not keen

Memphis Depay has been offered to Newcastle United as they consider potential attacking signings this summer, that a Magpies move for the Dutchman is looking unlikely.

Outsiders expecting Newcastle to spend vast sums of money in this window have been in for a surprise. Once again, the new owners have taken a pragmatic approach.

The backline looks considerably stronger with additions such as Nick Pope and Sven Botman. But there is a little reason for concern further up the pitch.

Newcastle are yet to sign any attacking players in this window.

Reports have suggested that a bid for Dominic Calvert-Lewin may be on the way. But the Toon Army may be hoping that a few new faces arrive before the Premier League season kicks off.

One player who has been offered to Newcastle is Depay. The 28-year-old ended last season as Barcelona’s top goalscorer. But he is now facing a fight to feature in Xavi’s plans.

Barca have signed Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. But they have also agreed a new contract with Ousmane Dembele. And with that, Depay could be on the way out.

Reports have claimed that Tottenham made an offer for the £17 million-rated forward. But Newcastle have been approached about a possible deal.

However, that Howe has concerns about signing Depay. The Magpies boss is not convinced that he is suitable for his system.

Memphis Depay offered to Newcastle

Being offered Depay would have seemed like something of a test for the Newcastle hierarchy. He is certainly the kind of marquee name fans may have expected to see signed when the new owners arrived.

He has rebuilt his career since struggling at Manchester United. And actually, he will not cost a lot at all.

But they are ready to back Howe and pursue the players he wants.

Newcastle supporters will hope that that decision does not come back to haunt them.
