Report: Martin Skrtel rejects chance to reunite with Steven Gerrard at Rangers

Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel has turned down a free transfer to Rangers. , Skrtel has rejected the opportunity to reunite with former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

Gerrard has been interested in bringing Skrtel to Rangers to bolster his defensive options. Joe Worrall will return to Nottingham Forest after his loan spell expires and Gareth McAuley’s short-term deal is coming to an end.

Consequently, Rangers could be in the market for a new centre-back. Skrtel fits the bill as Gerrard knows him well and he is an experienced option to have.

Rangers reportedly offered Skrtel €800k-per-year (just less than £700k-per-year) to move to Scotland. But he would have to take a major pay cut as he currently earns €4m-per-year (just under £3.5m-per-year).

Moreover, the 103-cap ex-Slovakia international has not ruled out staying at Fenerbahce. His agent has met with the Turkish club’s representatives about a potential extension.

The 34-year-old spent eight years at Liverpool with Gerrard between 2008 and 2016. He racked up over 300 appearances and lifted the League Cup with Gerrard.

But Skrtel is not keen on a move to Rangers with an offer from Parma also on the table. Despite Gerrard being Rangers boss, Skrtel seems to prefer a Turkish stay.
