Report: Marseille think Unai Emery is trying to sign Matteo Guendouzi for Aston Villa
Executives of Olympique Marseille believe Arsenal old-boy Matteo Guendouzi is now a target for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in this month’s transfer window.
The Frenchman joined the Gunners back in 2018 – the same year Emery was appointed as the heir to Arsene Wenger’s throne. Guendouzi, a teenager then, stole the show and was one of the best midfielders in the country that season.
Things, however, changed for the midfielder after Emery was sacked and Mikel Arteta took charge of the club.

Marseille think Unai Emery is trying to sign Matteo Guendouzi for Aston Villa
Just this week, reports from France claimed that an unnamed Premier League club have made an approach to sign Guendouzi, offering him a return to English football.
The 23-year-old was pushed out of Arsenal after a fall-out with Arteta. The Gunners boss just didn’t want him there, but his predecessor could well make him regret that decision now.

Guendouzi, branded as an ‘exceptional’ player, was fantastic under Emery at Arsenal. He played 66 times under the Spaniard – 48 of those coming in his very first season in English football – when he was still a teenager.
Although things didn’t work out for Guendouzi at the Emirates, he’d be a great signing for many clubs. He has been sensational for Marseille in Ligue 1 and was also a part of the France squad that made it to the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
It’s understandable why Emery would like to sign Guendouzi. Whether he can convince Marseille to let him go, however, remains to be seen.
The 23-year-old still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract.
