Report: Manchester City to hold off on signing £60.1m-rated ace; European giants could swoop in
Manchester City have reportedly shelved an attempt to complete a transfer for Portuguese defender Nuno Mendes until the end of Euro 2020.
that the 18-year-old left-back has been told by manager Fernando Santos to concentrate on this summer’s competition and to take his mind off a transfer. Mendes has a reported release clause of £60.1m.
Mendes is the youngest member of Portugal’s squad for Euro 2020. Furthermore, the Iberian nation one of the favourites for this summer’s continental competition.
More left-back problems for City
As per the report, City have now put their pursuit of the Sporting Lisbon defender on ice.
However, European giants Real Madrid are still keen on Mendes and could firm up their interest if he impresses this summer.
City are looking for a new left-back with the club open to selling Benjamin Mendy. The defender joined the club in 2018 for a reported fee of £52m .
Pep Guardiola’s side again spent last season without a nailed-on left-back who was viewed as the first-choice pick. Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko shared the role for the year. The Ukrainian international started against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final.
City will be taking a risk by delaying Nuno Mendes transfer
The left-back position has become something of a poisoned chalice for City since the arrival of Guardiola, with the Premier League champions unable to sign a player who can claim the position as his own.
Yet Mendes could be the player who breaks the curse, but City are taking a risk in their attempt to sign him. Indeed, with Madrid also interested in the youngster, there is a chance that the La Liga titans could swoop in for the fullback should he impress at the Euros this summer.
With few quality left-backs available this summer, City could be shooting themselves in the foot in their approach to Mendes.
