Report: Manchester City join race for £25m Tottenham star
that Manchester City have joined the race with neighbours Manchester United to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this summer.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain are all said to be interested in the 30-year-old, who has shone in recent months after being reinstated by Mauricio Pochettino.
The chase is hotting up for the former Southampton star, despite signing a new contract. The new deal keeps him at Spurs until the summer of 2020, but has activated a £25million release clause in his current deal.
Manchester United have been long-term admirers of the Belgium international, but they could now face competition from Pep Guardiola’s side. It is believed Alderweireld wants to remain in the Premier League.

It is somewhat of a surprise move from Manchester City, given that Guardiola’s side boast plenty of options at centre-back. Vincent Kompany, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Nicolas Otamendi are all first-team options.
TBR’s view
Tottenham have to do their utmost to keep Alderweireld, and the only way of doing that will be to offer the defender a new contract that includes a bumper pay rise and gets rid of his current escape clause.
Alderweireld was frozen out last season by Pochettino, but has returned this time around and remained a crucial part of the Argentine’s side. He will be key going into next season.
At £25million, he is a bargain despite his age. Spurs will have to spend a much bigger fee to bring in a player of his calibre and quality.
