Report: Manchester City beat four clubs to sign Phillips, two play in the Champions League
Manchester City have beaten four clubs in the race to sign England international Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United.
The report that Aston Villa and West Ham also wanted Phillips, as well as Chelsea, who could also offer Champions League football.
And added that Paris Saint-Germain, who of course will also sit at European football’s top table next season, also wanted the midfielder.
Romano also said that there were better financial offers on the table than the one from City, but Phillips only wanted to join the Premier League champions.
Manchester City set to sign Phillips
On City’s part, they were apparently impressed with Phillips’ character, which convinced them to make the move to sign him.
They needed someone to replace Fernandinho and the links with Phillips have been brewing for weeks, even once Leeds stayed up.
City tend to move swiftly and efficiently in the transfer market, and look to have done similar with Phillips, who can now battle for every trophy going.
It is a coup to beat Chelsea and PSG in particular, who can offer Champions League football and very good wages as well.
But there is uncertainty behind the scenes at both of those clubs, which City seem to have taken advantage of to get their man.
The Times report also says that City will now move onto Marc Cucurella, the Brighton left-back, to round off their spending for the summer.
