Report: Manager ‘likely’ to resign amid reports Newcastle are considering move

that Andre Villas-Boas is ‘likely’ to resign as manager of Marseille this summer after the Ligue 1 club terminated the contract of Andoni Zubizarreta – amid reports Newcastle are considering the Portuguese gaffer.

Villas-Boas, 42, has starred as manager of Marseille, taking the club to second place in Ligue 1 and with the French government suspending professional football across the channel, Marseille have immediately qualified for Champions League football.

However, Marseille have parted company with director of football Zubizarreta – announcing the decision on Twitter, four years after he joined. The decision is supposedly set to have a detrimental effect on Villas-Boas’ future at the club.

Earlier this month, Villas-Boas stated he was desperate to keep those, such as Zubizarreta, around him as they approach a difficult summer window – ahead of a Champions League campaign next term.

“I have to understand more or less who will be alongside me. We want to have the power to make decisions,” Villas-Boas said, . “It’s important that we, and the sporting director, have the opportunity to have a window of quality transfers.”

state that Villas-Boas is ‘likely’ to resign after Zubizarreta’s exit – which will act as a huge blow to Marseille following their second-placed finish in his first season. But Marseille’s loss may prove to be Newcastle’s gain.

TBR’s view – Should Newcastle consider AVB, if he leaves?

Villas-Boas struggled in his spells at both Tottenham and Chelsea, and has stated recently that he would never reconsider a return to the Premier League as it does not suit his style of management – but the lure of Newcastle’s riches may prove different.

That may be the case, especially if the former Zenit, Shanghai and Porto boss does indeed walk out on Marseille. Would he be a good appointment? His work as Marseille boss, on a shoe string, has been nothing short of sensational.

If Newcastle have the chance to land an in-form, more confident and authoritative Villas-Boas as manager, then they really should.
